How did you find this and how do you know this is Flittering?

There was a considerable amount of controversy on the Metal-Archives over this band, especially the claim that they were "funeral doom" from 1993 yet no one else had heard of them. It was quite fascinating, and to see this show up out of the blue is intriguing. The track sounds like dark ambient to me, is that what the second track is as well? Dark ambient?

I'm not aware of any controversy with this tape
but I've had it since maybe late '94 or so. I picked it up while I was in the service
overseas, it's not metal but seems to be tape-splicing & ritual music as far as I can tell. I included it here because it's slow and has death vocals, but I don't know how to categorize it exactly. I don't know if I'd call it ambient, that makes me think of Eno or something. I agree it's definitely not funeral doom though.

"how do you know this is Flittering?"

The tape has Flittering "Gloom" on it, so that's my best guess. I hope that helps you, Joe.

Very interesting!

Well, the controversy was mainly on the Metal-Archives though it started on Nuclear War Now forums if I recall correctly. Here is the thread to the MA discussion from a few years back: http://www.metal-archives.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54419

Another thread from that time was posted by someone later determined to be a troll and not affiliated with Flittering, but they posted a track that contained a rip off of Forgotten Tomb's song Alone. The riff that starts at 4:50.

Until I found this, it was pretty much assumed that Flittering never existed in the first place.

Is there any other information on the tape, such as who was behind Flittering?

Stefan R. said...

I read that thread earlier today and it's mind boggling!
I can't make heads or tails of it but it did crack my ass up so thanks for the entertainment Joe, I wasn't expecting that.

"Is there any other information on the tape, such as who was behind Flittering?"

The spine has Flittering "gloom" etched into the paper.

The fold has "Schwarzwald / Deutschland" etched into it.

The black part of the inlay has more etched into it but it's a bitch to read because you have to angle it just right in front of a mirror. My eyesight isn't 20/20 anymore so I'll have to see if my wife can read it and write it down.

The reverse side is blank cardboard.

Stefan R. said...

the mirrored text reads as:
"from the outer darkness dec MCMXCIII
first close foloweth close the second movement"

Etched in the smallest text, she thinks it says:
"devotions conjured & provoked by Bereaved Brothers"

Is it possible to request you to upload the other track : Close 2 (20:32) ?
Thank you!

Stefan R. said...

I don't know how I fragged 'em up but they are both working again.

Anonymous said...

The second player is broken and isn't playing any music. Can you fix it? :(

Stefan R. said...

Fixed and thanks for the heads up, again.

VRR an expert on Metal-Archives has informed that it is impossible for this to be a demo from '1993' since you can not get sound like this on a Tascam 4-track recorder!
This I believe is true, demo is a fake.
Nice try Dumb ass!

It's quite ridiculous to believe that someone would create an entire blog for the sole purpose of promoting one obscure and fake demo, especially since it's been running for near 2 years. There's no reason to suggest Stefan is being deceitful here, he's simply posting tracks from his personal collection. It may be that the date written on the tape is not accurate, but it wouldn't really make sense to lie about it since similar music was already available at that time. Just enjoy the tracks for what they are.

Stefan R. said...

Brave anonymous,
First, I can verify that there is no indication of the equipment used within the liner notes. You just pulled that out of your ass didn't you? Your supposed "facts" are only speculation.
Second, there is no reason to believe that Gloom was a "demo" as you claimed twice in your rant. (are these blatant misdirections intentional??)

Dear Stefan, could you please provide the following evidence:

1. photograph of jcard inlay with inscribed words as you claimed it.

2. the tool you used to rip it from the tape (whether its software, what hardware you used, what parameters and etc).

Anthony claimed its ridiculous to create well maintained blog for two years just to put this to public - well, currently this is how it looks like. The discussions on MA and other board was in 2009, and this blog was created in as I see in 2010. I have pretty good evidence being good expert that it is not of 1993. Therefore first of all I need to know those two above mentioned things prior to posting the evidence of my word.

Stefan R. said...

Dear Anonymous (my earlier comments were too jumbled, so here is a streamline response).

I asked my buddy who ripped the tape for me, this is is exact email to me - Not as specific as I had hoped but he is busy and it was a good-time-ago. Hope it answers some, if not all your questions.

Stefan, I didn't keep a log on any of those sessions but I usually use some or all of:

-multiple Nakamichi decks
-Pro Tools
-Dolby (Telefunken) & Nakamichi High Com II for Noise reduction (along with various digital plugins for restoration ie: hiss removal, etc)
and besides riding the levels, I don't remember it being all that difficult.

Any chance you'd be willing to sell?

Nope.

I hear no music styles this like before
what more bands do this

Stefan R. said...

I've listed plenty of unconventional doom, so take some time and listen to them all.

Anonymous said...

Its not doom as such, rather black ritual ambient, and yes, there are more bands in vein of this work, although material with two tracks here was defo created much later than 1993 and tape is faked to be trve.

Stefan R. said...

I understand and appreciate your skepticism, but I can only vouch for when I got it, as well as the date on the j-card.

But on the spirit-of-metal this tape has absolutely different cover, and year is indicated as1992, not 93...It seems that such tape was in existence in a very low stock, but most likely sounded completely different from what we hear within these two compositions. It is nonetheless very interesting topic to investigate as you're the only one whose word stands against all scepticism. Yet still its strange to see tape rip with preserved stereo field and such clarity as if there was no tape his at all.

Stefan R. said...

Dear Anonymous, I get all my tapes transferred professionally on high-end equipment.
But for shits 'n giggles I compared the original tape to the rip, and there is some "hiss" difference between them. I know that restoration and hiss removal is utilized during all my tape transfers. As far as I can tell, the stereo field between the tape and the mp3s I've posted are the same, and if there is any difference, it's negligible at best, and I hear no discrepancy (too many KISS concerts may account for this HAHA).
I hope I've been of some help in this matter.
The spirit-metal site is news to me, so I have very little, if anything to offer on that. The "1992" may be a typo. After all, since Gloom's artwork is obviously handcrafted, I see no reason there couldn't be other versions out there.

Anonymous said...

You're right about the artwork, but Stefan, I must correct you on a very important point. Gloom was largely influenced by Nekropolis’ „Musik Aus Dem Schattenreich“; however, you insist on calling it heavy metal, why?

Stefan R. said...

1. Good to know.
2. Thanks for the heads up.
3. ? ...I never claimed it was metal. Actually, I stated quite the opposite.

Anonymous said...

My apology. I meant no disrespect. I was only offering my insight on the '93-'94 Baden-Württemberg minimalist movement.
I assumed your blog was strictly metal based, and hadn't noticed the Maurizio Bianchi inclusion. Thank you for responding.

I have another question if you don't mind. Are you aware of these gloom practitioners, Godly Prayers Finis or Volavérunt? Also, Die Sonne Satans „Fac-Totum“ is comparable to what was happening in the southwest.

Stefan R. said...

No harm, no foul.

I don't know those bands, but honestly I'm not up to date with new stuff.

Anonymous said...

Like I already told you, the movement was between '93 & '94. I figured you would know this. How did you get the tape without knowing about the movement, or any of the other practitioners?

Stefan R. said...

I've already answered the question of "how" at the top of the page.

Anonymous said...

Another slowmo boring 90's obscurity with terrible production, so don't be fooled by those claiming this recording is "too good" for 1993! BULL SHIT! There are so many goddamn albums from back then that have far superior production value. I rank this alongside all those fucking garbage French Black Legion abortions //// Avoid like the plague and listen to some real music from 1993 like Cynic or more recently Necrophagist to hear what good production and musicianship really is.

Stefan R. said...

Your comment is pointless and has friggin nada to do with the kinds of music I post here.
